From the moment your feet hit the floor, to the moment your head hits the pillow, your day is full of habits.
Whether they are good or bad, our habits guide our lives, including our productivity at work.
Depending on what your habits are, they can be the key to the success of your new business or its failure.
If you want your side events and your overall well-being to thrive, you need to form good habits, which is difficult without a game plan.
Here are some tips for creating habits that you will stick to that will improve your business and your life.
How to create new habits
Forming new habits is just as important as eliminating bad ones and can be just as difficult.
We all took a New Year’s vow to get back to the old routine in a few weeks (or days).
In fact, the fitness app is Strava, analyzed 98 million users have carried out activities in recent years and found that most people stop implementing their decisions by 19 January.
The problem is not a lack of motivation or a desire to succeed. If you want to achieve new goals for your business throughout the year, you need to combine your good intentions with a solid strategy for success.
1. Build on existing habits
One way to maintain new habits is to incorporate them into your current routines. As you begin to monitor your daily actions, you will realize how many habits you have.
Combining your new habits with old ones makes it easier to follow them.
Do you have a cup of coffee every morning? Take this time to meditate, view an entrepreneur’s blog or podcast, or review a to-do list for the day.
Do you watch an hour of television in the evening? Use ad breaks for everyday tasks for your business that don’t require a lot of focus, such as invoicing or deleting your inbox.
2. Start small
If you are trying to reshape your life and implement a long list of great habits in one day, you are preparing for failure.
It’s great to have long-term goals for yourself and your side bustle, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
Most people do not have the will to immediately notice major behavioral changes.
Here is a health-related example. Let’s say your goal is to start eating healthier snacks. To get started, try swapping an apple cookie or bring a bottle of water to work.
When it comes to your business venture, turn your long-term ambitions into small habits that you can achieve as well.
By choosing habits that don’t require crazy motivation to get started, you’ll avoid burnout and be able to upgrade your habits.
3. Build gradually
In addition to starting with small habits, you need to gradually increase to achieve your goals faster.
Small wins add up and encourage you to keep going. To maintain momentum, consider breaking new habits into achievable pieces.
If you are trying to disconnect from the mains while working, start by disconnecting the devices for 20-minute repetitions that increase during work.
4. Stick to it
A 1960 book by plastic surgeon Maxwell Maltz claimed that habits are formed in 21 days, and the world has run with it. But this regularly quoted rule does not hold.
Research actually shows that most habits take longer than three weeks to stick to. According to a studies lähde: Phillippa Lally v European Journal of Social Psychology, habits require an average two months for design, some lasting up to 254 days.
In other words, if you’re discouraged because the habit doesn’t stick at first, no.
Habits take time. The more you act on a new habit, the more you consolidate it in your mind.
Therefore, you should practice your new habit every day. Consistency is key!
5. Go back again
When you fall off the wagon, don’t stay down. If you don’t follow your new habit once or twice, you don’t have to derail all the progress.
Try to plan your new habits with the thought of failure in mind, listing the things that might prevent you from completing the new habit.
Do you have daily intrusions that you are sure to encounter?
Think about how you can respond to them and get back to the task quickly.
6. Remove distractions and temptations
Accordingly, strive to eliminate as many distractions and temptations as possible and prepare a game plan on how to respond to the inevitable.
You may be working on your new business from home on Saturdays and know that your roommate will be in and out all day, or you may be invited by friends or family to go out during your work hours.
Setting boundaries is key. Let them know your schedule in advance, put on your headphones, and stay busy.
Or you try to devote half an hour of undivided attention to gaining new customers every day. If you close other tasks, hang up the phone and turn off the TV, you can be on the right track.
7. Make it easy to monitor
Unfortunately, you will encounter some obstacles along the way as you embark on developing new habits.
Your goal should be to stick to the plan as easily as possible.
One way to do that? Choose a hint that triggers you to implement your new habit.
For example, if you try to exercise every morning, set an early alarm, plan a run with a friend, and wear workout clothes.
You may need to start your work day with a specific task, such as writing a new article for your blog.
Create a task with a web platform like I understand, set a reminder and prepare a draft to start in the morning.
8. Use tools to help you keep track
There are dozens and dozens of platforms designed to help achieve personal and professional goals, many of which are free.
Customer relationship management applications such as HubSpot CRM or a project management app like Notion that I mentioned a minute ago are really useful tools for your business in general.
But there are also apps designed specifically to help create new habits.
Here are some of the best choices you might want to check out:
- StickK: The StickK, designed by behavioral economists at Yale, is based on a contract you sign with yourself and gives you the opportunity to bet money on your success and invite friends and family to monitor your progress.
- Habitica: Habitica with a customizable avatar represents a fun turnaround in maintaining habits, transforming your life and goals into a video game. If you’re looking for something creative and fun, Habitica is the way to go.
- Momentum: If you have an iOS device, you will love Momentum. The app allows you to track weekly goals, record, set reminders, and export data to Excel or Numbers.
9. Bring other people
You are much more likely to stick to a habit if you have people in your corner. Find a friend, family member, or co-worker to share your goals with.
Encourage them to respond to you and keep them informed of your progress.
If you want to use it online, consider creating an account Habitshare, a website / application that combines social media and tracking habits.
The app allows you to set reminders, check habits when you complete them, and share your progress on a social media resource, customizing who can see which goals.
In addition to finding a responsible partner, find a good mentor you can trust and learn from.
10. Reward yourself
Write down the habits you hope to incorporate and visualize yourself how you achieve them.
Think of the rewards it brings to achieving your goals and improving your habits.
If you’re trying to wake up an hour early to devote more time to your side venture, remember the potential that this step has for transforming your business.
The more you imagine that you are acting according to your goal and thinking about the benefits, the easier it will be for your new habit to take root.
And when you actually realize your new habit, treat yourself. It may take some time for you to see the tangible rewards of your effort, so create them for yourself along the way.
This will motivate you to keep trying and strengthen the habit.
