The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the United States hard labour market, and its impact is likely to be felt for some time to come.

Following the publication of the 2019-2029 job forecasts, which did not cover the effects of the pandemic, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) issued alternative scenarios modeling how it could affect jobs if COVID-19 continued to have moderate impact. to the economy compared to the strong.

In all occupations, job growth is expected to be almost one percentage point lower in the moderate impact scenario (2.9% vs. 3.7%) and almost two percentage points lower in the strong impact scenario (1.9% vs. 3.7%). ).

Although long-term job growth in these scenarios is subdued and many jobs could be negatively impacted in the future, there are still others that offer stable opportunities. In this study, we classify the most promising jobs for employment and pay according to the methodology below.

Data and methodology

Over the next 10 years, we filtered a total of 808 occupations, described in detail by the BLS for those with more than 10% projected employment growth (under the moderate pandemic impact scenario). We also filtered by occupations with an average earnings for 2019 greater than $ 64,240 (which is the 75th percentile of annual earnings nationally). The remaining 40 jobs are the most promising for employment and pay.

For further ranking of these jobs, we considered four measures: 10-year expected percentage growth in employment, 10-year expected growth in the number of employees, average wages for 2019 and four-year wage growth from 2015 to 2019. Both 10-year expected percentage growth in employment and a 10-year expected growth in the number of employees stems from the BLS moderate impact scenario.

We ranked each profession in these four metrics and gave each the same weight. We then found the average ranking of each profession and used the average to determine the final score.

The profession with the highest average ranking received a grade of 100. The profession with the lowest average ranking received a grade of 0.
