LOS ANGELES (AP) – Once a week, dozens of people gather on the most famous beach in Southern California, just before the sun sets in the Pacific Ocean, and dance quietly as if no one is watching.

Those who sway on the sand and wear wireless headphones with decorative LED lights that stream the music of a nearby DJ are ecstatic dance practitioners. Participants who move their bodies and get lost in the music describe an almost spiritual experience.

Meetings held at Venice Beach and organized by Ecstatic Dance LA are usually held indoors and under clear guidelines, which are partly intended to limit participants ’self-awareness.

“Be free. Dance the way you want. Without a verdict, “he writes in the promotional material of the dance community.

However, when the coronavirus closed the gatherings indoors, the community moved their meetings to the beach. Although they gave up privacy and stepped up live music, community co-founder Robin Parrish says the move was a success and that Sunset was a fair compromise.

Like all their events, he is drug and alcohol free. Cameras and phones are not allowed, although pets and children can accompany you. Conversation is not recommended.

Parrish says that for some participants trapped inside during a pandemic, silent dancing is the only social activity they perform.

Among them is Chase Beckerman, a full-time mother of two.

“I wasn’t really interested in coming when it was indoors. Being here on Venice Beach and being at sea actually led me to try an ecstatic dance for the first time, ”she said.

“This is my church. It has helped me a lot to survive this pandemic. “

When dusk turns to darkness, the DJ switches from dance tracks to calmer “healing music” and meditation begins.

Some future events will eventually move back intodoors. As dancers like the view of the ocean, Parrish says people miss the vibes of live music and dancing on wooden floors.

“We’re going to have a chance for both because some may not be willing to go inside,” he said.
