Your vagina cleans itself and produces bacteria that protect it from infections. However, there are some bad habits that can cause discomfort, irritation and even infections.

All women should take care of their vaginal health, but what is a healthy vagina? Well, it totally depends on your regular hygiene, especially when that time of month.

According to dr. Nupur Gupta, director of obstetrics and gynecology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Delhi, there are some common practices that women follow to maintain vaginal health, but they actually do more harm than good.

Yes, you may think you are keeping it clean and healthy, but you disturb the whole biome of your vagina.

That is why we are here to help you.

Here are some common things you may be doing or products you may be using that may negatively affect your vaginal health:
1. Women’s washing

The market is full of fashionable women’s hygiene products that promise to cleanse your lower regions. But dr. Gupta tells HealthShots, “The vagina is a self-cleansing organ. It is cleansed with natural secretions and thus maintains the right pH balance. Acidic pH maintains good bacteria, but when you use a woman’s wash to clean the vagina, it upsets the balance of bacteria, which can lead to bacterial vaginosis or fungal infections.

2. Crushed lubricant

Toxic chemicals are found in lubricants. Vaginal exposure to toxic lubricant components can cause discomfort, irritation, and an increased risk of infection due to short-term exposure.

Dr Gupta says, “Of course, your vagina produces enough lubricants to help maintain vaginal health and sexual activity. Artificial lubricants or lubricants reduce vaginal dryness during intercourse, especially after menopause or childbirth or in women who have dyspareunia or vaginismus. They do not completely solve the problem and you need to watch out for any skin irritation or allergic reaction. It can also affect fertility when planning to conceive couples. “

3. Boric acid

It has been used to treat bacterial vaginal infections, especially bacterial vaginosis (BV). It can be combined with standard antibiotic treatment. It helps remove bacterial mucus from the vagina. We still need more studies to prove that it is an effective cure for BV.

4. Yoni pearls

They are available as vaginal cleansers or vaginal detox containing herbs. They claim to detoxify your vagina and clean it from BV or fungal infection. But dr. Gupta says, “It can cause vaginal irritation, severe infection (TSS toxic shock syndrome) or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).”

5. Brazilian hair removal

With Brazilian wax, pubic hair is nurtured and removed from the front of the pubic bone, around the external genitalia, between the upper thighs and around the anus. Dr Gupta says, “It actually increases your chances of genital problems (irritation, itching, inflammation infection). It is also not recommended for women with chronic skin problems such as eczema or psoriasis.

Remember that some vaginal discharge is completely normal. Do not use artificial soaps or showers to keep your bacterial balance in your vagina healthy.
