The government has announced that it will not be allowed to sell brand new petrol or diesel cars in the UK by 2030 and that by 2035 hybrids will also be banned.

In other words, in 14 years, the sales market for new cars in the UK will be almost entirely electric. This means that producers have to get the queue by then electric models for sale and is available to us to replace the wide range of petrol, diesel and hybrid cars currently on offer.

Not a small feat, frankly. And of course an electric car won’t suit everyone; Finding a solution that will work for those whose annual mileage is too high or simply do not have access to a charger for electric cars at home or nearby will be imperative in the coming years.

But if you can switch, electric cars offer many benefits, even now. Not only are modern electric cars fast and quiet, but they are also cheap to drive and maintenance and mechanically very easy.

And the pace of development is such that, with a few exceptions, this top 10 has little to do with our choice of electric vehicles a few months ago.
