There was one, the other alternate end, where Gi-hun got on the plane and left. And then, of course, he was the one where he turned back and went towards the camera. ‘
He further explained how the producers were constantly wondering if Gi-hun would have to go and go see his family to ‘pursue his own happiness’ – before deciding that this wasn’t the right way to suggest the message they wanted to convey through the series.
“We came to the conclusion that the issue we wanted to propose could not be resolved if he went on a plane,” Hwang continued. ‘The question we want to answer – why did the world come to what it is now? – can only be answered or suggested if Gi-hun turns back and steps towards the camera.
‘So that’s how we ended this end in the final.’
