An F-35 plane crashed into the sea after the pilot had to catapult over the Mediterranean Sea.

The incident involved one of eight F-35b RAF aircraft currently on board HMS Queen Elizabeth as she continues her first voyage.

As is known, the incident happened over international waters on Wednesday at 10 a.m., shortly after takeoff.

The Ministry of Defense confirmed that the pilot had been found and an investigation had begun. This is the first time such an incident has occurred.

Ben Wallace, the defense minister, told reporters in Rome: “He left the F35 soon after takeoff. We are glad that the pilot is safe and healthy and is back on board. Our operational training years continue. ”

The aircraft carrier has 18 F-35bs, 10 of which are made up of US Marines.

The planes, which cost around £ 100 million each, have made around 2,000 take-offs and landings aboard the HMS Queen Elizabeth in the last six months without major incidents.

No other vessels or aircraft were involved in the incident as a result of a technical or human error.

It comes before Friday’s visit by the Prince of Wales on an aircraft carrier as part of the King’s visit to Egypt.

It is understood that efforts will now be made to restore the jet, which contains highly sensitive technology and data.

A Defense Ministry spokesman added: “A British F-35 pilot from HMS Queen Elizabeth was ejected this morning during routine flight operations in the Mediterranean.

“The pilot was safely returned to the ship and the investigation has begun, so it would be inappropriate to comment at this point.”

The planes from the vessel had previously been involved in attacks on the remnants of the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The Royal Navy’s 65,000-tonne leading ship is returning to the UK from a first deployment that included exercises with the Indian Army.

This was part of the deployment of a strike group of aircraft to the Indo-Pacific amid heightened tensions with China in the region.

The aircraft is operated by the renowned 617 Squadron, also known as the “Dambusters” Squadron.

Liz Truss, the foreign minister, spent the last day of her two-day visit to India on board the vessel last month.
