Review of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: faithful but without shine

Sinnoh, where Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are located, has always been one of the most unusual regions in the entire Pokémon universe. Mythology and tradition permeate every crevice; in one location you will find what is seemingly the Church of the Pokémon, while the most difficult trainer in the region is an archaeologist focused on ancient legends.

But it’s also completely insane. The villains dress up as astronauts and their ultimate plan is to spoil time and space to change the world in their image. The friendly Pokémon professors from previous games are replaced by irritable grunts. Your competitor is rushing around and constantly bumping into things. The entire map is laid out on a series of underground caves where you can go sailing and treasure hunting.

Even the Pokémon themselves are great, some of the best designs in the history of the series, and this is one of the few titles in the series where older monas are updated with new development events and ways to play with them.

Playing the remakes was like climbing to the back of the Dialge (the beast that controls time on the Brilliant Diamond box) and rushing back to 2007 to open the box with my childhood toys. Everything that made me fall in love with these games for the first time is here and waiting for me to unpack and play again.

The problem is that there is practically nothing else. These are, in all ways that count, exactly the same games as they were released in 2007 with fresh color. Of course, there are slight corrections. The fairy type, introduced just two generations from the original Diamond and Pearl, is here, as well as some newer moves and items, and the opportunity to change your coaching outfit into one of a few preset designs, but for all purposes, it’s like the last 15 years of Pokémon have never happened.

As far as I could tell, there was no sign of any of the 400 Pokémon added to the series since the originals came out, there were no new areas to discover, no new twists in the story, even the dialogue remains exactly the same. It is a remake of the originals. And while there is an undeniable factor of nostalgia, it all seems a bit pointless.

There are some new accessories, but they are thin. The underground tunnels have been widened so that you can now catch some new creatures in them, a beautiful but unthinkable addition. There is also a new Exp. Share an item that lifts your team more evenly, although this inadvertently results in your Pokémon being significantly too high in the first few hours, making the rest of the game easier.
