Toxic shame is a term that refers to the shame that someone experiences as a result of mistreatment by others or due to certain traumatic events. Many of us who struggle with toxic shame have experienced traumatic events since childhood, and some have these problems much later in life.

In my case, I always was thickly embarrassed as a child, leading to a number of problems such as bulimia, insecurity and addiction. When we experience shame, it convinces us that we are worthless. We enter a vicious circle of self-hatred, so much so that it can prevent us from achieving our life goals.

We can often feel incapable of moving forward. If left unchecked, toxic shame is likely to cause even more serious mental health problems over time. It is therefore imperative to find the best way to deal with it so that we can get our lives back on track.

How does toxic shame affect us?

Toxic shame causes chronic fear of shame and embarrassment, and these feelings can cause stress and anxiety. This is most often rooted in childhood and is directly related to what your primary caregiver has told you (but not always). In adulthood, it can often cause mood disorders and other mental health problems.

An internal message about your lack of value convinces you that you are incompetent. Toxic shame can also cause fear. It’s perfectly natural to worry when you feel like you have to be so embarrassed.

What can we do to overcome toxic shame and feel brilliant from within?

Overcoming toxic shame can be a challenge, but with attention and self-awareness it is possible. To get rid of toxic shame, we need to change our mindset, work aggressively to change our inner dialogue and past conditions so that we can gain spiritual trust.

1. Seek the help of an expert

The help of a trained professional who specializes in trauma and shame can help you cope with difficult thought processes and experiences caused by toxic shame. When we release the pain of trusted professionals, we feel empowered from within to unlearn all the old programming, and it is this discharge that helps us rediscover our inner sexy selves.

2. Practice forgiveness

Reconciliation with yourself and your past actions can help you heal and let go of the shame that accompanies it. Forgiveness can heal. Behave like you would treat a good friend who is going through the same thing; that is, with kindness and empathy.

3. Encourage compassion for yourself:
