The mother claimed her active sex life saved her as her husband found a lump in her breast that turned out to be severe.

Tina Gray, 52, of Aldershot, Hampshire, and her husband Dez, 51, have become closer than ever after consciously trying to keep their spark as she went through menopause two years ago.

The mother of one child explained that she asked Deza to examine her left breast after she thought she was feeling something unusual, and he immediately detected a bump that he was sure was not there before.

It turned out to be a cancerous mass and Tina said her life was saved by warehouse manager Dez, who got to know her breasts anew.

Tina Gray, 52, of Aldershot, Hampshire, credited her husband, Dez (pictured), for “saving her life,” after discovering a bulge in her breast that was diagnosed as cancerous.

She underwent surgery to have a lump removed in each breast before the cancer had spread.

Tina said: “When we found the lump, it was such a big shock – for a moment you find yourself facing your own mortality.

“As soon as Dez felt the lump, he knew something was wrong.

“I trusted his judgment and went straight to the doctor – after all, who would know my breasts better than my husband?

‘Menopause has brought us closer than ever. We became more intimate and Deza became very interested in my tits, which now meant he saved my life.

“Call the NHS for such a quick move and Macmillan for the incredible support, and especially to my husband, whom I want to remarry after 20 years together.”

Tina started going through menopause as early as 2020 and found that the change affected many aspects of her body.

Although menopausal sex could be uncomfortable or painful, Tina was determined to find ways that would not separate her and Deza further.

Tina said: ‘When menopause started, it was like I was going through puberty again, but vice versa.

‘With Dez, I just had to be honest and tell him how I was feeling, instead of pushing him away so he could understand what I was going through.

It’s not that I didn’t want to have sex with him, but sometimes I couldn’t because it was uncomfortable or even painful.

‘We are no longer alone, there are many things that can help couples have a sex life as they go through menopause, you just have to find them!

‘Instead of pushing us apart, it just brought us closer. Our sex life didn’t end, we just had to adjust. ‘

Dez added, “It all coincided with covid and prisons and so much had to be thought about when menopause began, and it was like, ‘Oh, we don’t need that.’

‘We just talked about it, worked through it and now everything is fine!’

One evening, Tina was watching television without a bra as she felt a hard lump just above her nipple as she moved her hand past her left breast.

Concerned, she told her husband she felt the lump and asked him to feel her breasts to see if he noticed anything unusual.

When Dez pointed out that she felt something weird in the same place as Tina felt, on August 11, she signed up for a visit to her doctor, who referred her to a breast surgeon.

Dez said: ‘We’ve been together for a long time, so I’m well acquainted with the geography of Tina’s upper torso.

‘Like you I was browsing and I was worried that there was something unusual in her chest that we thought we needed to check.

‘It was scary, the unknown was scary. We knew we had to go and fix it. ‘

Tina was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer, so the doctor felt a lump found on her left breast and a smaller lump in her right breast.

The mother of one child went for surgery on October 20, where they cut out lumps and took a biopsy from her control nodes.

Doctors revealed that Tina has the first invasive ductal carcinoma on her right breast and the third stage on her left.

Thanks to Dez’s quick discovery, they were able to remove all the cancer during the operation before it spread to other parts of Tina’s body, effectively saving her life.

Tina, who has a 24-year-old son, said: ‘After menopause and then my battle with cancer, Dez and I just got closer than ever.

‘I couldn’t have endured all this without my supportive family and nurse MacMillan, who was with me at every meeting. Even with the mask, I could see her eyes smiling at me and it was such a consolation.

‘Dez and I recently celebrated our 20th anniversary in October, and now I just want to marry him again – I just want to show him how much I love him.’

Dez added: “I feel privileged to be able to help diagnose or at least discover something in my wife’s body that could change my life or limit my life.

‘I feel privileged and proud to have been able to help, and all together it has brought us even closer.’
