Tory MPs accuse scientists of “trying to turn us into decisions” and impose Covid restrictions on fighting the Omicron version

  • Disclosed Minutes Revealed The consultants are pushing for tighter travel restrictions
  • Despite evidence that the risk posed by the variant may have been overestimated
  • Former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith has called for Sage’s breakup

Scientists were accused last night of trying to “force” ministers to impose draconian restrictions on Omicron variant.

Minutes of a meeting of the government’s scientific committee leaked sage revealed that consultants are pushing for much stricter travel restrictions despite the emergence of evidence that the risk posed by this option may have been overestimated.

A government source last night expressed irritation over the leak and said minutes of Monday’s Sage meeting had been handed over BBC before the ministers even saw them.

And Tory MPs reacted angrily and accused the scientists of “fearing”.

Former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith has called for Sage to be broken up and replaced by a new body that must abide by the rules of “collective responsibility”.

He insisted: “It is impossible to govern properly if advisers reveal pieces of their advice or talk about it.

“Sage needs to be put back in their box. They are scientists looking at one aspect of this, while the government needs to look at the bigger picture. It is not their job to oppose the decisions of the ministers and try to dissuade them from doing something else.

You also need to remember that every prediction Sage made was wrong. On the other hand, the government proved to be right when it decided to open in the summer.

“Stricter restrictions now that we have no idea what this variant is doing would be just another unnecessary hammer blow to the economy.”

Ministers announced travel suppression last week in response to Omicron. But the Sage document, which has leaked to the public, shows that government scientists want to go much further.

The minutes said the return of pre-departure tests would be “valuable” for people flying to the UK.

However, they say that testing after two days will “detect significantly fewer cases” than if the tests were performed five or eight days after arrival – something that would require much longer quarantine periods.

Workers grabbed advice and called for the immediate introduction of pre-departure tests.

But Huw Merriman, Tory chairman of the Commons Transport Committee, told the Daily Mail: “These are the same voices of doom that have resisted the release of barriers to international travel over the past year and proved wrong in the process.”

A government source said: “Sage has been very useful in the last few months, so it is disappointing to see that it has escaped this way.

“Obviously there are some people who want to work very hard without really knowing anything. We prefer a balanced approach. ‘
