The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) noted that almost no progress has been made over the last 25 years in reducing Britain’s gender pay gap over the last 25 years, given the leaps in women’s education.
The gap between men and women as the amount earned per hour fell from 24 percent in 1995 to 19 percent, according to the Economic Brain Center.
However, it revealed that three-quarters of the smaller drop was caused by women who became more educated instead of closing the wage gap. The difference in earnings also decreased only slightly from 20.5 percent in 2005.
IFS said that able-bodied women earned 40 percent less in 2019 than men, as they are less likely to work, work fewer hours and earn less per hour. However, this is 13 percentage points less than in 1995.
IFS Deputy Research Director Monica Costa-Dias said there was “almost no progress on gender differences” given the “rapid improvement in women’s education”.
Research shows a small improvement in the pay gap between men and women for fear that a pandemic and a shift to domestic work threatens to exacerbate the problem. Companies with more than 250 employees are required to report the gender pay gap, but a sharp distinction remains between wages, hours worked and employment.
