The Food and Drug Administration extended its entitlement to Pfizer in BioNTech’s booster shot for people aged 16 and 17.
The FDA’s emergency authorization came after first data from South African scientists and Pfizer showed that the omicron version of the virus that causes Covid-19 significantly reduces the protection provided by the initial batch of two-dose vaccine.
However, Pfizer’s initial laboratory data showed that booster injection provided significant protection against omicron, with the ability to fight viruses comparable to the 95% protection shown by the two-dose series before the original virus strain.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still need to approve booster therapies for 16- and 17-year-olds before giving injections. Last month, the CDC approved booster injections for all adults aged 18 and over.
