Flights are booked. The bags are packed.
The cancellation of Christmas travel plans seems incomprehensible at the moment.
But for many, the speed at which the omicron version is expanding also applies. The highly portable version of Covid-19 – first unveiled in late November and has since been unveiled in almost 90 countries – is causing travel uncertainty around the world.
Nevertheless, some in medicine and research are perceiving a different tone this year than the 2020 “stay home, stay safe” mantra – at least for now.
“At this point in the pandemic, we learned a lot about this virus and how to protect ourselves from spreading the infection to others – and getting the infection,” said Stephen Kissler, a researcher at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, in online discussion 9 dec with the public radio program “World”.
If certain precautions are taken, it is possible to “travel relatively safely,” he said.
1. Be strengthened
“If you are vaccinated and strengthened, and be careful when you go to common places like airports to make sure you are constantly wearing your mask, you should be fine, ”said Dr. Anthony Fauci, America’s Best Infectious Disease Specialist. Dec. 19 on NBC’s “Meet the Press. “
He said it existed “a big difference in the risk of severity” between “a vaccinated and reinforced person who has an infection and someone who has an infection who has never been vaccinated.”
Moderna announced this week that laboratory tests have shown that its vaccine boosters give a significant increase in omicron antibody levels. Pfizer released similar results earlier this month.
Eric Topol told CNBC on Monday that those with three shots are 95% protected from the delta variant still circulating.
The omicron version causes five times more “breakthrough cases” among vaccinated people, Jim Cramer toldCrazy money“However,” so far it has been reported that most of them are quite mild. “
“We’re going to see quite a number of new infections,” Topol said. “Some of these aren’t going to be mild … we just don’t know what that part is yet.”
2. Use quick tests before (small) meetings
“Rapid tests provide the best protection we have against spreading disease, “Kissler said.” I’m starting to think about it more and more [vaccinations] as a prevention against diseases and serious illnesses – and testing as a prevention against the spread. ”
He recommended the use of rapid tests just before the event, ideally an hour or two before the start. He also suggests that Christmas gatherings be small and ventilate the room.
“No matter how cold it is outside, my windows will crack by four to six inches, ”he said.
The most risky part of air travel is the time before and after flights, not during flights.
Sheldon H. Jacobson
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Because rapid tests are not as accurate as PCR tests, Topol recommended their frequent use to increase confidence in the results.
Similarly, Fauci said, “If you run them consecutively – one or two or more – you will get a result that would be an accurate result.”
3. Focus on the airport
“Given the number of new cases reported daily, people are infected at airports and boarding planes,” said Sheldon H. Jacobson, a professor of computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who studies public health and aviation safety.
But passengers shouldn’t worry about flights the most, he said.
“The most risky part of air travel is the time before and after flights, not during flights,” he said. “Waiting at the terminal before boarding is a vulnerable time and environment for the virus to spread.”
“The air filtration and air circulation systems in the plane are doing their job to prevent the virus from spreading there, as are the face covers,” Sheldon H. Jacobson said.

Kissler agreed and said it didn’t make sense to take off his mask at the airport just to take it seriously on the flight.
“You’re most likely to get infected when you’re standing in line at security at the airport or waiting to rent a car,” Kissler said. “Wear a mask [while aboard] the plane for sure, but … be very careful when masking throughout the process. “
4. Upgrade your mask on the go
In the United States, KN95 masks are much easier to find, as hospitals and healthcare facilities can only use N95 masks, Smart Air says, although “that doesn’t mean KN95 masks are inferior.”

“Airlines that would provide such facial wraps to every aviator would be an effective way,” Jacobson said. “I would add interstate bus lines and trains – like Amtrak – to this group.”
For additional protection, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing two masks: disposable mask below and fabric mask above. Holders of three-layer disposable masks may also carry out “knots and jam “., which includes knotting the ear loops near the mask and inserting excess material for a safer fit.
Finally, stay on the course while traveling.
“Vaccination, high-quality testing, and high-quality face masks … provide a layer of protection,” Jacobson said. “Any weakness in one or more layers weakens the security of the individual and the community and effectively strengthens the virus.”
When not to travel
The The CDC recommends that people not travel if they:
- have been exposed to Covid-19 unless they have been fully vaccinated or cured of Covid-19 in the last 90 days
- they are sick
- Test positive for Covid-19 and has not yet completed isolation, even if fully vaccinated
- We are waiting for the results of the Covid-19 tests
The advice may change
Travelers should keep in mind that travel tips may change when more about the omicron version is learned.
Bill Gates announced on Twitter on Wednesday that he was canceling “most” of his Christmas travel plans because of the version.
At a press conference on Monday, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged holidaymakers to reconsider some of the events: “It is better to give up now and celebrate later than to celebrate now and mourn later.”
