Harry Potter actor Chris Rankin condemns JK Rowling’s transgender views as “harmful” as he became the last star of the franchise to give up his author.

Harry Potter star Chris Rankin described JK Rowling’s transgender views as “harmful” as he became the last star of the franchise to renounce its author.
The actor, who played Percy Weasley in six of the eight films about the Boy Wizard, said: “I work a lot with charities that focus on LGBTQ +.
“A lot of my family are community members. You can probably guess where my loyalty is. ‘
He added: “When a trans person says he is a man or a woman, that is what he is and that is how we should treat them. If they say otherwise, it hurts them. ‘
Rowling, 56, has faced accusations of transphobia after mocking an online article in June 2020 that used the words “people who are menstruating” instead of the word “women”.
She later defended herself against the allegations in a passionate essay, but continued to face criticism.
Harry Potter actors Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Eddie Redmayne, who plays in her films Fantastic Beasts, have previously criticized the author for her comments.

JK Rowling, 56, has faced accusations of transphobia after making fun of an online article in June 2020 in which she used the words “people with menstruation” instead of “woman”.
Rowling stressed the importance of biology and said: “I know and adore trans people, but by erasing the concept of sex, many are removed from the opportunity to meaningfully discuss their lives.”
Rankin submitted an audition letter for the role of Percy Weasley at 16 and played that role for 11 years.
His latest comments follow controversy when the writer criticized Scottish police for allegedly recording the rapes of penile perpetrators as if committed by a woman if the attacker “identifies as a woman”.
Rowling replied to Scottish police and tweeted: “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is power. The penitent person who raped you is a woman.”
Her comments were a hint at George Orwell’s twenty-four and eighty-four – a dystopian novel about a regime that manages to turn the truth around in order to control its people.

In September 2020, she faced new calls about transphobia after it was revealed that the villain in her latest book Troubled Blood – written under Rowling’s pseudonym Robert Galbraith – is a male serial killer who dresses up as a woman to kill his victims.
An early review of The Daily Telegraph’s 900-page book – in which the critic states that it seems that “book morals: never trust a man in a suit” – sparked an immediate response online.
And in March, Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley in the beloved film series, admitted that after Rowling’s remarks, he felt he had to stand up for transgender people.
He said that although “there is no authority” in the debate, he believes he is responsible for speaking out in support of the trans community, as “silence is louder”.
