Florida police removed a number of community activists from a press conference with Gov. Ron DeSantis after the group demanded that they be allowed to challenge his coronavirus policies.
A live video of the clash showed police protesting the protesters in handcuffs and taking away the rest of the group after refusing to leave the State Department of Health building in the Florida capital Jacksonville, where the governor is scheduled to have a meeting.
“The governor is afraid of meeting people,” said Ben Frazier, president and founder of the Northside Coalition in Jacksonville, when a police officer handcuffed him. “When it comes to public welfare, this governor doesn’t care.”
“He doesn’t want to meet this public, he wants to run away!” Mr Frazier added that the assistant governor had rejected the idea of fleeing.
Mr Frazier was taken away in the back of a police vehicle, a First Coast News reporter reported at the scene.
The footage showed a group sitting in an information conference room waiting for the arrival of Mr DeSantis, who says he wants to talk to the governor.
The man, who said he was the facility manager in the building, told activists they had broken into the property and asked them to leave.
“I want to talk to the governor about his policy on the pandemic, on critical race theory, on Bill 1,” one protester replied, referring to the anti-riot law proposed by Mr DeSantis.
After the group said they would not leave, a woman who said she was in the governor’s office told them they were not fit and asked the media to stop filming the group and prepare for a press conference instead. Police officers then took the group out of the room.
Mr Frazier said Mr DeSantis was “missing in action” when the Omicron version of Covid-19 tore the country apart.
“There he goes! The governor is running! Look! “Mr. Frazier said, as if showing the governor walking past out of sight.” The governor is running! “
“He really wants to talk to you,” an aide told Mr Frazier, accusing him and other protesters of postponing the press conference and preventing the conversation.
“Tell him we said welcome to Jacksonville, and stop running. Tell him to stop running and hiding and meeting people, ”Mr Frazier told staff.
