Former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is considering taking over the affected Derby County Championship club.
Ashley is ready to make a dramatic late move to buy Derby, who is in administration, and it is understood that she has spoken to Quantuma, a business consulting firm that cares about the future of the club.
Derby faces liquidation the money ran out, and Quantuma announced on Christmas Eve that the appointment of a preferred bidder was “inevitable,” according to the American businessman. Chris Kirchner withdrew from the run.
One of the remaining groups is led by former Wolves CEO Jez Moxey, who works on behalf of General Sports Worldwide, which includes former Derby President Andrew Appleby and former CEO Sam Rush.
But now facing competition from Ashley and his party, a decision on who can proceed with the exclusivity talks is expected later this month.
Ashley’s tumultuous reign in Newcastle ended last October when it agreed to sell a £ 300 million consortium, including Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund.
Ashley, CEO of the Frasers Group, owner of Sports Direct, has been an unpopular figure among Newcastle supporters during his 14-year term.
Derby has been on the board since September and is currently at the bottom of the championship after suffering 21 deductions.
