The emergence of a highly transferable version of omicron has seen cases of Covid-19 rise in countries around the world.
In the last 28 days, the United States and the United Kingdom have recorded the largest number of new cases of the virus in the world, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
However, there are a handful of countries with a higher prevalence of Covid-19 than the United Kingdom and the United States, which recorded 2,664 and 1,810 cases per million people in the week to January 6, respectively, according to data from Our World and Data.
These countries include Ireland, Greece and Denmark.
Ireland
In the week ending 6 January, Ireland had a seven-day average of 4,020 Covid-19 cases per million people, according to Our World and Data. According to official government figures, 23,817 new cases were confirmed in the country on Thursday. the highest daily number so far.
In the week to 5 January, the virus caused 40 deaths in Ireland. Despite reaching record highs last week, coronavirus deaths in Ireland are well above the 220 deaths in April 2020. However, the number of hospitalizations and deaths is rising as the number continues to rise.
Government figures show 2.3 million recovery doses have been given by Thursday 55% of the eligible population received three injections of Covid vaccine. Meanwhile, 77% of the population is fully vaccinated with the initial two doses.
Irish health officials released on Thursday that the government will not implement further restrictions to mitigate the growing number of cases. The state currently has a number of measures in place, including mandates for masks, restrictions on large indoor events, and limiting home collection to a maximum of three households.
Back in December, Irish health officials have revealed that the omicron strain was now the predominant version of Covid-19 in the country.
The Irish government said in a statement on Wednesday that the epidemiological situation “remains a matter of great concern”, but that “the rapid pace of the vaccination program is central to offsetting the impact of the omicron wave of disease”.
Greece
Greece also has a high prevalence of the virus, with a current 7-day average of 3,468 cases per million people in the week ending 6 January.
On Tuesday, the state reported a record 50,126 new cases a day and 61 deaths, official figures show. By Thursday, that number had fallen slightly to 33,716, while the daily death toll had risen to 70.
In Greece, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, 66.3% of the population is fully vaccinated.
Greek Health Minister Thanos Plevris said in an interview with a local radio station on Friday that provisional data showed that no patient with confirmed omicron had been intubated at the hospital so far.
He added that measures are being taken to ensure that Athens has enough hospital beds, as the omicron variant has increased pressure on hospitals in the Greek capital.
His comments came after officials told a news conference Wednesday that more than 90% of cases in Greece are now a new, highly portable version of omicron.
Although Plevris said on Friday that the omicron temporarily seemed milder than previous versions, he noted, “When we say omicron is milder than delta, it doesn’t mean it’s mild.”
Thursday’s data showed that 593 Covid-19 patients had been admitted to Greek hospitals in the past 24 hours.
Denmark
Elsewhere, Denmark recorded a 7-day average of 3,334 cases of Covid per million people in the week to 6 January, data from our world show.
On Friday, Denmark recorded a temporary 18,261 new positive test results in the last 24 hours. According to official data, a total of 755 patients with covid-19 were admitted to the hospital, which is one admission less than the previous day.
Ten new coronavirus deaths were reported in Denmark on Friday.
Almost 80% of the Danish population has received two doses of Covid vaccine, with more than half being immunized with a booster dose.
On Friday, Danish authorities announced that omicron now accounted for 90% of Covid-19 cases in Denmark.
It came after Danish health official Tyri Grove Krause he told local media this week, omicron could help the population return to normal life in a few months.
