Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said the vaccine, intended for the omicron version of Covid, will be ready in March, and the company has already started producing doses.

“This vaccine will be ready in March,” Bourla told CNBC’s Squawk Box. “We are already starting to produce some of these endangered quantities.”

Bourla said the vaccine will also target other variants in circulation. He said it is still unclear whether omicron is needed or how to use it, but Pfizer will have a few doses ready because there are governments that want the vaccine ready as soon as possible.

“The hope is that we will achieve something that will have much better protection, especially against infections, as protection against hospitalizations and serious illness – with current vaccines it is now reasonable as long as you have, say, a third dose,” Bourla said.

Real-world data from the United Kingdom showed that Pfizer and Moderna were only about 10% effective in preventing symptomatic omicron infection 20 weeks after the second dose, according to a study by the British Health Safety Agency. However, the original two doses still provide good protection against serious diseases, the study showed.

According to the study, booster injections are up to 75% effective in preventing symptomatic infection.

That’s breaking news. Check again for updates.
