An elementary school teacher was beaten to death in a random attack while running along a popular canal bank in Ireland.

Ashling Murphy, 22, was killed Wednesday afternoon on the banks of the Grand Canal in Cappincur, Tullamore, Offaly County.

Medical assistance was provided, but she died at the scene after the attack at 4 p.m. A 40-year-old man who was locally reported to be a Romanian citizen was arrested.

Gardai said “there will be no stone left unturned” in bringing her killer to court and that they do not believe she knew her attacker. Police asked for witnesses.

Superintendent Eamonn Curley told reporters Thursday: “Where the crime took place is popular among Tullamore residents and is often used for recreational purposes.

“At this stage, there is no information that the victim and her killer knew each other. We believe that this crime was committed by a man who acted alone.”

He added: “Our prayers are currently with Ashling’s family and, in fact, the wider community, her fellow teachers and the children she taught, who are without a teacher today.”

Ms. Murphy taught 28 seven- to eight-year-old students at Durrow State School and was a member of the National Folk Orchestra of Ireland.
