Queen deprives Prince Andrew of military titles after sexual assault case sent to trial

Prince Andrew has been stripped of his military title and will defend a civilian sexual assault as a “private citizen,” Buckingham Palace said Thursday.

“With the Queen’s approval and consent, military relations and the Royal Patronage of the Duke of York have been returned to the Queen,” the palace wrote in a statement.

“The Duke of York will continue to perform no public duties and is defending this case as a private citizen.”

Andrew will no longer be known as His Royal Highness.

Virginia Giuffre is suing Andrew in federal court in New York, claiming she was forced to have sex with Jeffrey EpsteinHer friends – including the Duke of York – when she was 17 years old. Prince Andrew strongly denies the allegations against him.

Meanwhile, Ghislaine Maxwell is no longer struggling to hide information – including eight names – from Ms. Giuffre’s lawsuit against her, her lawyers say.

Ms. Giuffre’s lawyers, who accused Maxwell and Epstein of sexual abuse, have long struggled to reveal the names of the eight “John Does” mentioned in their 2015 civil lawsuit.

Maxwell’s lawyers withdrew, but on Thursday they seemed to have canceled the fight.

Full list of military titles lost by Prince Andrew

Prince Andrew has been stripped of his military titles, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday.

The announcement came after more than 150 veterans of the Royal Navy, RAF and army signed a letter asking the Queen to relieve Prince Andrew of his military appointments.

The decision means that Prince Andrew will lose the following titles:

  • Colonel of the Grenadier Guard
  • Honorary Air Commodore RAF Lossiemouth
  • Chief Colonel of the Royal Irish Regiment
  • Chief Colonel of the School Small Arms Corps
  • Chief Commodore of the Fleet Air Force
