Judge Lewis A Kaplan rejected the Duke’s lawyers’ motion to dismiss the civil case after arguing that Ms. Giuffre had waived her right to prosecute the royal family by signing a confidential settlement with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The verdict will be a big blow for Andrew, and media lawyer Mark Stephens said it will encourage meetings of senior royal members as they try to address the looming damage to the monarchy’s reputation during the Queen’s platinum jubilee year.

Stephens told the BBC: “Judge Lewis Kaplan has thrown a reasoned judgment into the middle and heart of the royal family like a bomb and threatens to provoke a constitutional crisis as a result.”

He said the duke “has no good chance” and added: “Basically I think he will have to take part in the lawsuit or he will have to settle and that is perhaps his worst chance.”

Andrew has three main options – ignoring the lawsuit, which is his right, cooperating with the U.S. legal system to defend himself against the charges, or attempting an out-of-court settlement with Ms. Giuffre.

If he fails to comply with the civil procedure, a default judgment will be issued in favor of Mrs Giuffre.
