The shaving scientist has created the most detailed three-dimensional map of the universe to date.

Researchers hope the map could eventually help us tell where the cosmos is coming from and where it is going, so we can better understand dark energy.

And they have already noticed interesting details in the data: they help reveal the secret of the most powerful lights in the universe.

“There’s a lot of beauty in that,” said Berkeley lab scientist Julien Guy.

“There are huge clusters, filaments and gaps in the distribution of galaxies on the 3D map. They are the largest structures in the universe. But within them you find the imprint of a very early universe and the history of its expansion since then.

The map was made possible by a dark energy spectroscopic instrument or DESI. It has been operating for seven months and is only 10 percent of the way through its mission – but it has already created more detailed 3D data than any galaxy survey before.
