Study experts from University of Florida examined blood samples from 106 adults before and after attending intensive wellness. During the highly organized program, the volunteers meditated for more than 10 hours each day, in addition to not speaking for eight days, enjoying a vegan diet, and adhering to a normal sleep schedule.
According to their findings, which were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciencesthe researchers found that many immune – related pathways actually shifted in participants ’samples after withdrawal.
“The study for the first time offers clinical evidence that the immune system can be strengthened naturally without pharmaceutical intervention through meditation, ”the study’s lead author said Vijayendran Chandran, Ph.D.an assistant professor of pediatrics and neuroscience at the University of Florida School of Medicine Eat it, not it!
Dr. Chandran explains that he and his colleagues were “surprised to find increased activity in as many as 220 genes directly linked to the immune response, including 68 genes linked to responses to viruses and cancer.” In fact, he was also a COVID connection.
“While meditation increased the activity of 68 antiviral genes (interferon signaling), a comparison of patients with severe COVID-19 disease showed the opposite trend – levels of these antiviral genes decreased significantly,” adds Dr. Chandran.
Interestingly, the researchers found that the strong changes in the genes continued for another three months after the withdrawal. “These findings could have potential implications for a number of immune-related conditions, including COVID-19 and multiple sclerosis, as meditation has been found to produce beneficial genetic activity comparable to conventional treatments for multiple sclerosis patients,” says Dr. Chandran.
So, is there any reason to believe that those of us who meditate for 10, 15, or 20 minutes a day can enjoy the same health benefits? “Long-term daily short-term meditation can also improve the immune system,” concludes Dr. Chandran. “But we haven’t tested this scenario yet.”
