Rescue teams found four bodies last night while searching for damaged metal and debris.

Pictures from the scene show passengers were stuck in wrecked wagons as rescuers tried to pull them out.

Railway authorities have ordered an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Meanwhile, 45 injured are being treated at the hospital, senior police officer Debarshi Dutta said.

The families of the dead and injured will receive financial compensation from the Indian government.

Accidents are particularly common on India’s extensive obsolete railway network.

Safety standards remain a concern with the national system, which operates 9,000 passenger trains and carries about 23 million passengers every day.

In 2016, 127 people were killed when 14 wagons derailed in the state of Uttar Pradesh in one of the worst rail accidents in India.
