Leon Edwards will finally get the long-awaited kick against UFC welterweight champion Kamar Usman.
UFC boss Dana White has confirmed that Edwards will be “100%” next in line for £ 1 for the pound.
Edwards, who was raised in Birmingham, is undefeated in 10 fights since Usman defeated him in their first meeting six years ago.
‘Rocky’ had a problematic campaign in 2021 that started with an unfortunate blow to the eyes in March against Belal Muhammad, which led to the fight being declared non-competitive.
Edwards defeated popular fan Nate Diaz in his only win of the year as the Briton’s fight against Jorge Masvidal was canceled in December after the American withdrew due to injury.
And White realized that Edwards didn’t have the best of luck when he discussed his decision to award him the title.
“This kid had a bad run and he deserves it. If you look, Colby (Covington) lost against him (Usman) twice, Gilbert (Burns) lost, Leon’s next. He’s number 3, ”White told TSN.
Usman – who defended the title three times last year – is considered one of the most dominant champions currently in the UFC.
The ‘Nigerian nightmare’ stopped Burns in early 2021, knocked out Masvidal in the April rematch and scored his second win against Covington in November.
Edwards revealed he would leave and wait for the title as Masvidal withdrew from their fight at UFC 269, despite Khamzat Chimaev offering to replace the American.
Chimaev – who is 4-0 in the UFC – was first booked to fight Edwards at the Fight Night event in December 2020.
The fight was then canceled three times after Chimaev struggled with long-lasting effects. Covid-19 and considered withdrawing from the fight.

And White praised Edwards for agreeing to fight Chimaev after he had said so before. no one wanted to fight Chechen.
“I wanted to point out that we were at a reunion meeting on Tuesday and I always think‘ no one wants to fight him ’that Leon Edwards signed a duel contract,” White continued.
“I think (Edwards) was ranked 3rd at the time, so I wanted to say this publicly that he absolutely decided to fight him.”
“I never credited this child with the merits he deserved. He said yes to that, signed a duel agreement and was ready to get started.”
Edwards will only have the chance to become the second British UFC champion in history, and veteran Michael Bisping was the first to do so in 2016.
