Ricky Gervais he struck at Pope Francis after saying that people who chose to have pets instead of children were “selfish”.

The 85-year-old head of the Catholic Church has openly expressed concern about declining birth rates around the world, saying it could be because “pets’ take the place of children”.

He also called it a “form of selfishness” for people to do.

However, the 60-year-old comedian, who became an actor, declined to comment.

The After Life star told the Radio Times podcast: “I think what he believes in is ridiculous.

“It’s stupid to say, isn’t it? How easy it is to have children? How can it be selfish if you don’t bring something into the world that doesn’t exist on any level?”

“It’s not like there’s a big species or cage of unborn embryos saying, ‘We want to be born.’ That doesn’t make any sense.”

Ricky, who has no children with his partner Jane Fallon, said there are many reasons why the couple chose not to have children, but one is “enough is enough”.

He continued: “No one will say, ‘Gervais will not have children, we will soon run out’.”

Earlier this week, Pope Francis addressed the topic of reproduction in his weekly general audience at the Vatican.

He said: “Today … we see a form of selfishness. We see that some people don’t want to have a child.

“Sometimes they have one, and that’s it, but they have dogs and cats to replace children. It may make people laugh, but it’s a reality.”

Even Ricky’s comments come a month after that launched a sharp attack on Tories who “break the rules”..

Meanwhile Boris Johnson continues to face strong pressure over his parties on Downing Street, Ricky had previously condemned the prime minister and his party for behaving like ” Charlie Sheen “when the rest of the UK followed the closure instructions to stay home.
