The recognizable Buick car he drives Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise in the 1988 award-winning film Rain Main will go up for auction.
The 1949 Roadmaster convertible, bought by American actor Hoffman after the film was completed, is valued at between £ 100,000 and £ 182,000.
Hoffman said the vehicle, described as the “third character” of the film, was “stored too long” and should be “driven, enjoyed and appreciated.”
Jakob Greisen, Bonhams the head of motoring in the US, said: “This Roadmaster represents a remarkable, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a third character from the classic film Rain Man.
“We are honored to have been entrusted with this special car and we are confident it will become a hit with both Buick fans and Mr. Hoffman and Rain Man fans.”
Rain Man follows a life-changing journey by selfish bicycle dealer Charlie Babbitt (Cruise) and his autistic brother Raymond (Hoffman).
The film received several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Barry Levinson and Best Actor for Hoffman.
“The car had a very strong visual presence in the film and was presented all the time,” Levinson said.
