One man died and about 30 others were rescued in the English Channel after their boat ran into problems crossing Friday from northern France to the UK, prosecutors said.
The victim is said to be 20 years old and of Sudanese origin, the prosecutor’s office in Boulogne-sur-Mer said, adding that the others were rescued in the waters near the village of Berck.
A record 28,000 migrants crossed the English Channel from France to the United Kingdom in small boats last year, according to the Journalists’ Association, sparking major diplomatic tensions between neighbors.
On November 24, at least 27 people died. the deadliest disaster since migrants began diving in large numbers instead of trying to stow it in trucks or cars traveling between countries.
