Wwhile at the heart of the tennis world was the trouble of Novak Djokovic, the world’s former top player, Andy Murray returned from the set and defeated fourth-seeded American Reilly Opel with a 6-7 (6) 6-4 6-4 and reserved a place in his first final after the victory in Antwerp in 2019.

After a close first set that belonged to a tie set, Murray broke early in the second set and took his lead, scoring a 6-4 set.

Murray took his momentum into the deciding set, interrupting Opelka’s serve again and leading 5-4, then securing the victory with a collected attitude of love, thus establishing a showdown with top seed Aslan Karatsev, who won 6-3 7- 6 (13). ) 6-3 against Dan Evans.

“I lost a tight first set and it’s not easy to come back against someone who serves like that, but I kept working and seizing opportunities,” said Murray, who could lift his 47th ATP title by winning the final on Saturday.

“Returning has always been a strong part of my game and I made good use of it [against Opelka].

“It would be amazing if we started the year with a trophy, but it’s been a big week for me, stringing together four results like this is a lot more than I managed last year.”

It wasn’t an entirely British final, as Karatsev was beaten 6-3 7-6 (13) 6-3 over British third seed Evans in a grueling match that lasted more than three hours.

The Russian comfortably won the opening set, and Evans came together and defended three duel points in a long draw and forced a decision.

Evans, angry that his opponent was able to take a five-minute break to change before the third set, trailed by 3-0 before returning to level, but Karatsev secured a break and went 5-3 and sealed the victory with his fourth match point.

“It was a tough match, especially against Evans, who doesn’t give any free points at all,” Karatsev said.

“In the second he was moving better and didn’t make many mistakes, my level dropped a bit. I found the energy for the third set and I’m happy to win.”
