The British teenager, who as a child began to imitate the ‘King of rock and roll’, was named the best European impersonator of Elvis.

19-year-old Emilio Santoro from Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, was crowned European Champion of Elvis Artists for a tribute to artists for 2022 at a ceremony in Birmingham.

Emilio, who began introducing himself to Elvis at the age of four after being introduced to the legendary musician by his grandparents, said that naming him the best Elvis in Europe was a ‘dream come true’.

Emilio began to gain his manners by studying videos of the legendary rock star and even showed off his style in a home-style jumpsuit in the style of ‘The King’.

He performed as Elvis during school talent shows and took part in his first competition on the continent, aged 14, where he admitted to “shaking like a leaf”.

At the European Elvis Championships and the convention, which takes place every year on Elvis’ birthday, dozens of tribute groups compete for the title of European champion.

The event, held at the Metropole Hotel in Birmingham, is considered one of the largest annual Elvis imitation competitions in Europe.

Emilio told the BBC about his victory: “Everyone always says life is too short – follow your dreams and it really can’t be true. Being crowned champion is simply amazing.

‘I had a jumpsuit put together by my daba and aunt, and I’ve wanted to pursue that as a career ever since.

“All the support messages on social media have been so humiliating.”

Emilio first became interested in the legendary rocker because of his iconic appearance and the way he performed on stage, which he learned to imitate.

The teenager’s next show is in his hometown, ahead of performances in Germany, America and Canada and a November UK tour.

He added: ‘It has only just begun to deepen. Ever since I was little, I dreamed that I wanted to be on stage.

‘At first I was nervous to follow these dreams, but luckily I have a family behind me and I have never looked back since.’

Neither of Emily’s parents has a musical background with her mother Emma Santora, who works as a business manager at a food company, and her husband Joe is a self-employed builder.

Emma said she was an ‘emotional wreck’ when she watched her son at the competition, but he ‘impressed’ us.

“We looked at him, we helped him train, we saw the hours of work he puts in, so looking at how he finally got the recognition is just amazing,” she said.

His grandparents were initially surprised that Emilio clung to Elvis at such a young age, which amused them, but they liked it and always encouraged him.

“I’m a big Elvis fan, so it was a great pleasure to see that he loves everything Elvis has.

“I’m so proud that he stayed true to himself and didn’t follow the crowd and introduced his friends to Elvis.”

Emilio said he prefers to sing Elvis ’gospel music and ballads that are lesser known but adored by fans.
