It came when further allegations surfaced that Downing Street staff drank so much during prisons that brought to the refrigerator for weekly “wine Fridays”.

The images obtained by the Daily Mirror showed images of a wine cooler that could hold up to 34 bottles, delivered to number 10.

Allegedly, the staff used a wine storage case and beer from the local Tesco Metro branch.

On Saturday, Ian Levy, a Conservative MP from Blyth Valley, said restrictions restricted by those on Downing Street prevented him from seeing a dying family member.

‘The public deserves better’

He said: “I understand the strength of the feelings of many Blyth Valley residents about the events on Downing Street, especially among those who were prevented from seeing their family members at the time.

“It affected my family – I couldn’t see my wife’s mother when she was dying in a nursing home.

“I understand the real anger at the reports that the authorities did not follow the rules. The public deserves better than that.

“Waiting for an investigation on my part is not an attempt to avoid this, but to ensure that we are aware of the facts.

“It is important that the investigation is carried out as soon as possible, as we will be in a better position to consider what further action needs to be taken. I assure you that I will then take into account the views of the people of Blyth Valley.”

Darlington Conservative MP Peter Gibson said: “I want to reiterate my belief that if the rules are broken, I expect these individuals to be exposed to the same consequences as any other person.”
