Hampstead Heath is usually the busiest promenade in north London. Hollow Ponds, a few miles east and in Leytonstone, is also beautiful because of its calm waters and dried oaks. It’s in London, so it’s hardly a walk in the wilderness, but it’s understated.

Thornham Estate, Suffolk
This is a particularly beautiful area of rural Suffolk with an abundance of interesting buildings, bridges, water and forests. The village of Thornham Magna is steeped in history and has been mentioned in the Magna Carta; some farmhouses with oak beams are 600 years old. The Thornham estate has marked several walks around its area – the trail is enough to keep you from feeling crowded.
