More words apparently never came into the lexicon of Royal Caribbean International. It is a small one, a modest one. As the cruiser prepares to launch the world’s largest ship, superlatives are in effect. Bigger, bolder, incomparable. remarkable. But who can blame them given that the vessel in question is Wonder of the Seas, well, wonderfully, a floating pleasure dome with more room to eat, sleep and play than many land-based resorts.
It’s not the first time the Royal Caribbean has impressed us with the world’s largest ship – the Wonder is fifth in the series – but because the line likes to outdo itself, each is bigger than the last. Its immediate predecessor, the Symphony of the Seas, is only 228,081 GT (gross tonnage) and can accommodate up to 6,680 passengers. Wonder has 236,857 GT and up to 6,988 passengers. This is a few thousand more than many British villages.
Ironically, given that there are so many travelers, this is not a great choice for those hoping for new friends. It’s so big that you rarely see the same people twice and most people still go on a fun vacation with friends or family and don’t bother too much with going out of the way when the ship arrives in port. If you are attracted to meeting people and discovering new destinations, choose something smaller. There won’t be as many places to eat or things to do, but you’ll see more and you won’t feel so anonymous.
