SINGAPORE – Singapore intends to allow vaccinated visitors from all countries to skip quarantine on arrival when the Omicron wave passes, authorities said during a virtual news briefing on Wednesday.
Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said the travel rules are designed to prevent the importation of infections into the country, but this category of cases accounts for only 1% of daily cases and “no longer has a significant impact” on Covid’s situation in Singapore.
The focus in the future will be on whether visitors to Singapore become seriously ill and burden the healthcare system, he said.
“In fact, we should place less emphasis on SHN and tests on travelers, [and] more on ensuring they are fully vaccinated and strengthened, ”he said.
“Instead of having vaccinated travel lanes or VTLs with selected countries that we consider to be at low risk, we should actually allow SHN-free travel for … fully vaccinated passengers from all countries,” Ong said when asked. referred to notices of stay at home issued to visitors to Singapore.
“This transition should be made not now, but after the omicron wave has peaked and started to falter,” he added.
Authorities have not set a date for the new policy to take effect, but Gan Kim Yong, trade and industry minister, said the Omicron wave could peak in a few weeks.
Vaccinated hiking trails
Singapore has already announced that it wants to reopen its borders more so-called vaccinated travel belts, which allow travelers from certain countries to visit without quarantine.
However, once the new border measures come into force, vaccinated passengers from all countries will not be subject to quarantine requirements.
“Our ultimate goal is quarantine-free travel for all vaccinated passengers,” Transport Minister S Iswaran said.
When Singapore switches to the “vaccinated traveler system”, it will first change the way it categorizes the countries from which visitors come.
From 22 February, countries will be divided into three main groups – limited, general and low infections. The vast majority of countries will be in the general category and are subject to the same entry requirements unless VTL has been introduced.
No country will be in the restricted category for now, but countries and regions could move there if a new variant is discovered, authorities said.
In addition, a press release from the Ministry of Health states that previously delayed vaccination routes with Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates will begin on 25 February. Authorities also announced that new VTLs will be introduced for Israel, Hong Kong and the Philippines.
Covid situation
Singapore reported a record 19,420 new covid cases on Tuesday.
In the last 28 days, 99.7% of reported cases had mild or no symptoms.
The city-state has reported 497,997 covid cases and 913 related deaths since the start of the Covid pandemic.
About 90% of Singapore’s population received two vaccines under the national vaccination program, and 64% of the population received rehabilitation therapies.
