Only recently, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah spoke about his struggles with sleep due to the illness he suffers from. Yes, he has onomatomania, in which a person constantly repeats a certain word or phrase. Even when he tries to fall asleep, he can’t because his mind never rests. So what is this condition? How can it be treated?

To better understand this, HealthShots contacted Dr. Priyaranjan Avinash, psychiatrist counselor, IWill. Here’s what the expert has to say: “In medical language, the English suffix‘ mania ’signifies an obsession with something that could be anything. It should be distinguished from another medical term, hypomania, which is a major mental illness characterized by elevated mood, increased energy, targeted activities, decreased need for sleep, grandeur, and so on.

All about onomatomania

As already mentioned, it is an obsessive use of a word, expression or phrase. In its extreme form, this term is used even when it is not needed.

“A person is looking for ways to use a term or word, which makes the sentence long and indirect. They even get distracted if they don’t know how to use the term. Frustration is real if they don’t remember to use words or phrases. This can cause restlessness, anxiety, irritability or insomnia, “says Dr. Priyaranjan.

In addition, the expert says that onomatomania can be associated with certain mental and neurological conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, epilepsy and even schizophrenia. However, this is not a sufficient criterion to diagnose any of the above mental states and is a very rare occurrence.

Does onomatomania occur in certain people?
