Investigation into the murder of a teenager in the halls of London

After the murder of a teenager, a hunt takes place in university halls in London.

Detectives released a picture of 22-year-old Maher Maaroufe on Saturday night, wanted in connection with the murder of a 19-year-old woman.

Police were called to the Arbor House on Sebastian Street in Clerkenwell, East London, at around 5.10 on Saturday.

The victim, who has not yet been officially identified, lived on the top floor of a six-story block. Police said she suffered “serious neck injuries” and was allegedly in a relationship with Mr Maaroufe.

Classmates said she read psychology at City at the University of London.

One resident, a 21-year-old student of the company, heard early Saturday morning that a fire alarm had been triggered and then someone had fled the ground floor exit.

20-year-old Leona Sigmud, a music student, said: “I saw her in the hallway, but I never spoke to her. I don’t think she was British. When I heard it, at first I didn’t believe it. We are all shocked. “

Police said Mr Maaroufe was “known for traveling” and has links around London. He is also known to travel to Cambridgeshire.

Detective Chief Inspector Linda Bradley said: “The woman’s family has been informed and will be supported by experts in the coming days and months. My thoughts and the thoughts of my team are with them at this terribly difficult time.

“We believe the victim is a student who studied at City at the University of London.

“Early signs so far show that the victim was in a relationship with Maaroufe and that they were together that evening.

“Urgent investigations to find Maaroufe are underway and I urge him to attend the police station immediately.”
