Fans will be able to watch the Manchester United women’s team match at Old Trafford for the first time on Sunday, but this 112-year-old pitch is no stranger to women’s games.
The club’s women’s team debuted last season at the stadium with 74,140 performances at a time when spectators were not allowed in the “Dream Theater”, but the history of women’s football at the stadium dates back more to 1921 and hosted one of the world’s largest international women’s games:
January 8, 1921: Dick Kerr, Women 12, Women of Bath 0
The first known women’s match at Old Trafford happened when Dick Kerr’s top women’s team was booming. Their legendary actress Lily Parr reportedly scored four times when they came away with a victory over Bat, in a game designed to raise money for former World War I soldiers.
There were more than 35,000 of them, which was not unusual for Dick Kerr Ladies. Their most famous match took place on Boxing Day 1920 in Goodison Park in front of 53,000 spectators. Due to its growing popularity, the Football Association later banned women from playing in affiliated positions later in 1921, with the FA at the time deeming the game “unsuitable for women.” The ban would be in effect for almost 50 years.
April 22, 1989: Leasowe Pacific 3, Friends of Fulham 2 (FA Women’s Cup Final)
This turned into one of the most dramatic in the history of competition on the pitch, but it was also by far the darkest and most emotional of the week when English football was not in the mood to celebrate.
Just seven days before the final, a disaster occurred in Hillsborough. Survivors of the Leppings Lane End included Leasow Pacific teammates Jill Salisbury, Dianne Coughlin and Cathy Gore.
Salisbury, Coughlin, Gore and the rest of Merseyside-based Leasowe Pacific – which later became Everton Women, Sunday guests at Old Trafford – were emotional winners against Friends of Fulham, despite future English coach Hope Powell supporting the London club. a support whose star names also included Englishmen Marieanne Spacey and Brenda Sempare.
The day after the final, both teams visited Anfield to lay a wreath and pay their respects to the victims of Hillsborough.
September 2, 1990: England 0, Norway 0 (International Qualifiers)
England were at Old Trafford in a modest qualifying match for the European Championship. Among the visiting team was the Norwegian excellent Hege Riise, who in 2021 became the interim head coach of England and led the GB team at last year’s Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Spacey, Powell, and Sempare were all in the early XI of England. It was reported that there were only 435. Norway would qualify for Euro 1991 with four teams and finish in second place, but England failed to qualify for the finals.
July 31, 2012: USA 1, North Korea 0 (London Olympics, Group G)
After a 22-year wait, women’s football returned to Old Trafford twice during the 2012 Olympics, and the first of those matches was, to put it mildly, an interesting political match as the U.S. beat North Korea. Famous American actress Abby Wambach scored the only goal in the quarterfinals in front of 29,522 spectators. That same night, the GB team defeated Brazil at Wembley ahead of the then-record British crowd of 70,584.
August 6, 2012: Canada 3, USA 4 (aet, Olympic semifinals)
After the hat-trick of Canadian Christine Sinclair, the world record international scorer in men’s and women’s football, American Alex Morgan won in the 123rd minute in the extra time at the end of overtime and settled the score. – the end of the classics. The United States then won the gold medal, beating Japan at Wembley, where 80,203 visitors are still the largest crowd in the women’s race recorded in the UK.
March 27, 2021: Manchester United 2, West Ham 0 (WSL)
Amid the coronavirus lock rules without fans on the ground, Manchester United finally made their debut at Old Trafford last season against West Ham. Striker Lauren James scored the team’s first goal on the scene shortly after half-time before American star Christen Press doubled the lead.
