P&O Ferries’ plan to restart the Dover-Calais crossings in time for Easter is under threat as the dispute between the government and the operator in Dubai is escalating.

Sources in Whitehall said P&O vessels could remain moored in ports until May after failing to undergo rigorous security checks.

Further delays would increase stakes in the dispute between Grant Shapps, the transport minister and the operator.

P&O said that last week the voyage between Dover and Calais would resume in time for Easter. He acknowledged that this timetable would be “subject to regulatory approval”.

The company has three ferries moored in Dover and another in a dry dock in the port of Kent.

Inspections by the Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA), a department of the Department of Transportation, officials usually take two days. This means that P&O vessels are unlikely to operate for Easter, even if presented to officials on Monday.

Late Friday, the MCA released the European Causeway after detaining the vessel at its port in Northern Ireland last month.

An MCA spokesman said: “No further inspections of P&O Ferries are planned for the weekend.”

P&O has already accused the MCA of “unprecedented levels of rigor” in its inspections. Authorities responded, “We are inspecting without fear or affection.”

One of the ferries in Dover, Pride of Kent, was detained by officials after security checks were not carried out 10 days ago. One source in Whitehall said this was a significant mistake and that it will take some time to fix it.

“If your entire safety management system is in the pan, this [Easter] he is really optimistic, “they said.
