It seemed like winter would never end, but after months of cold temperatures, warmer weather finally came. For those hoping to celebrate this weekend with a trip to the sea – perhaps the first in six months – there are a dozen of the least crowded sandy sections in England.

1. Nanjizal, Land’s End, West Cornwall
This is the real Land’s End, a world away from the theme park right next to the cliffs. Yawning sandstone caves look as if they could once hold dormant dragons, and low tide reveals a white sandy beach, though its shape varies with winter storms. The Song of the Sea rock arch has an emerald pool that invites you to swim straight to the ocean on the other side. Stroll south and find further bays in St Levan, Pedn Vounder and Porthgwarra.

2. Porthbeor Beach, St Anthony, South Cornwall
The Roseland Peninsula, adorned with tropical gardens and secret churches, is a kind of place lost in time. There are good beaches in Great Molunan, close to the lighthouse, and Towan, but this one is the best and least known and only a minute walk from the road. Long, wild and sandy, with fantastic rocky pools, you’ll find a super secret cove in the north that can be accessed at low tide. This is where Crusoe would feel at home.
At the crossroads at Bohortha (near St. Anthony, TR2 5HA) find your way down to the cliff, which ends with a wooden staircase.
