Retired grandmother Margaret Biddle and her husband, John Hughes, have gone much further than that, renovating their 1970s bungalow off the north coast of Wales with savings and money borrowed from the family.

“Although it depends on where you live, it is unlikely that your house will be worth as much as you spent on it, and even a refund is not short-term,” he said.

“However, I have remodeled my house and my family now has a wonderfully comfortable home with excellent air quality and low running costs. That seems like a great investment. “
