Ssem Deanreports: Mikel Arteta admitted that he had reservations about taking over at Arsenal due to the great challenge of following in the footsteps of Arsene Wenger.

Arteta was close to taking over at Arsenal immediately after Wenger’s departure, in 2018, but was eventually overlooked in favor of Unai Emery. Emery’s appointment proved unsuccessful as Arteta was given the role on her second questioning the following season.

The problems with replacing Wenger are similar to the challenges facing Manchester United, Saturday’s Arsenal opponent, since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. Erik ten Hag will be the last coach to try to bring back success at Old Trafford this summer. Speaking about the difficulties in replacing Wenger, who has been Arsenal’s coach for 22 years, Arteta admitted that the Frenchman was cautious in taking over the job because of his legacy.

“It was close, but things happen for a reason and it was probably too fast,” Arteta said. “There are people who have decided and have decided differently.

“They have signed another outstanding coach who is showing how good he has been at Villarreal again. But sometimes it’s not about the performance of the person, it’s about the performance of the context you’ve shown, or the team that suits you, whether it’s the right moment or not the right moment, sometimes it’s not about performance but about time. ”
