Hundreds of holidaymakers were depicted in “crazy” queues at three in the morning at Manchester Airport with check-in desks stretching “across the door” – as tens of millions of cars are expected to hit the roads today as Britain returns home after the holidays.

The airport acknowledged that it is “unfortunately much less than we need to be” as it advises passengers to arrive three hours before the flight.
