Hash for money: Why Thailand gives cannabis plants to millions of homes

One of the goals is to attract foreign touristswho have recently begun to return in large numbers to the well-regulated medical and wellness industry.

Certain rules will still apply, although authorities have not indicated how they will be monitored.

First, the plants will need to be of medical quality and will only be used for medical purposes.

Although possession and use of all parts of cannabis plants, including flowers and seeds, will be allowed, the extracted content will remain illegal if it contains more than 0.2 percent of the psychoactive ingredient that produces “high” – tetrahydrocannabinol or THC.

In addition, home-grown cannabis cannot be used for commercial purposes without additional permits, although authorities have not indicated how they will monitor the new rules.

By the end of last month, the Food and Drug Administration had already received about 4,700 applications for licenses to import, possess, grow and produce cannabis and cannabis, the Bangkok Post reported.
