Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has revealed how he turned down several offers from Bayern Munich to leave Anfield as he urged his players to make the final pressure to create a “special season”.
Klopp says Bayern have regularly tried to lure him during his coaching career – including at Liverpool – but have turned it down because the challenge of running Germany’s strongest and richest club is less appealing than the ‘journey’ he embarked on at Anfield.
Although there are chances for Kop four Given Manchester City’s advantage in the Premier League looking increasingly distant, Klopp is determined not to swap his position at Anfield with any other club.
“Which club should I go to to be different? Tell me, “Klopp said.” The only thing I could do is ask Pep (Guardiola) if he’s annoyed by all the victories and take the lead in City. Is that an idea? That wouldn’t work, I don’t want to do that.
“I could go to Bayern a few times. I could win more titles in my life, I would say for sure – at least good chances. I didn’t do that. I had a contract here and I never did. The world is not full of winners. Hopefully the world is full of triers. I try and sometimes I win together with other people. I’m happy with that. “
Bayern are expected to inquire about Klopp every time he has changed coach in the last six years, even just before the Liverpool coach signed a new contract with Anfield in 2019. As Klopp recently extended his current contract until 2026, there is no chance of a Liverpool coach returning to the Bundesliga in the near future.
Klopp reacted to how he maintains his top-notch optimism when – despite leading Liverpool to the brink of the most spectacular season to date – another 90-point campaign is unlikely to be enough to win Manchester City to the title. The city then strengthened by signing a contract with Erling Haaland that clogs Liverpool’s highest earnings.
Liverpool will try to add the FA Cup to their victory in the Carabao Cup over Chelsea this weekend, and the Champions League final will follow later this month. Klopp accepts the assessment of whether this campaign is successful, depending on the outcome of the remaining four Liverpool matches.
“There’s not just one way to see it,” he said. “There is an obvious way to see it: you win almost everything – it’s impossible, at least very difficult. And then another thing, you have to see what you won, and you can think about it, ‘Was it a success?’ This season so far, I think we all agree, is a very successful season. But there will be no season without a win, that’s right.
“We’ve already won the Carabao Cup, but we’re Liverpool, we’re a world-class club, we have a world-class team, so it’s hard to define a season as completely successful if you win the Carabao Cup just by being in every other final. So we know that.
“The crucial part is coming now, no problem. The season, so far, was the first time the team had fought for the title and been in three finals – so the reason is because it’s really tough and really intense. Being here is good, but the icing on the cake is still missing and we are working on it now. ”
Analysis: Liverpool’s excellent act doesn’t take prisoners – not even Jurgen Klopp
Amidst the grueling pursuit of four trophies in one season, the way Jurgen Klopp regains energy is reassuringly orthodox.
“I fell asleep twice yesterday afternoon,” the Liverpool coach said. “It simply came to our notice then. I was surprised! Everything is fine. I feel really good. When I have a day off, I can’t sleep long because I start working in the morning.
This is an ironic image given that Liverpool is all but asleep at work, with Saturday’s FA Cup final The 60th match of the campaign, which will equal the club record 21 years ago.
“Crazy schedule,” Klopp says.
Not from triple trophy winner Gerard Houllier played all sorts of home games and Uefa any English side repeated this feat.
In addition to their talent, Liverpool players are fueled by Klopp’s optimism and enthusiasm. The word ‘f’ – fatigue – has been temporarily banished, with Klopp insisting that he happily return to the well.
“I have. come on. I don’t run, I don’t fight, I don’t have to challenge and all these things – I have different challenges, “he said.
“It’s hard, but it’s okay. It’s never been done (four), so it’s like the first step on any island. We are the first team to try this (at this stage of the season) and we are doing it.
“Go to all the finals and try while chasing City. This is a difficult task, but it has always been clear. If we were to say at the end of the season that you will be three points behind City in all the finals and two games before the end, I would say ‘no, I don’t see that happening’. Not all together in the same season. But the boys managed it and it’s really special. We now know that the decisive part is coming. The heating is over. “
