A young woman died because her parachute failed to open parachute jump in France, causing it to fall to the ground 3300 meters lower.

23-year-old Romane Hourcastagnou, who hails from the French city of Strasbourg, was an experienced parachutist with more than 100 jumps below her belt.

When the tragedy happened, she was parachuting near her home in Strasbourg with a group of 10 people, all experienced parachutists.

According to local reports, Hourcastagnou jumped from the plane to an altitude of 1,000 meters (3,281 feet), but the parachute did not open for unknown reasons.

Witnesses said she tried to perform an emergency maneuver, but failed due to the height and speed of the fall and hit the ground within seconds.

Other paratroopers tried to help the victim, but without success. She reportedly died on the spot.

One eyewitness told local media: “We followed the accident helplessly. After the parachute did not open, the blow to the ground was very strong.”

Rescue services were called to the scene, but they could only confirm the death of the young woman, and her body was transported to the local morgue.

The 23-year-old has been involved in the sport for several years and has made more than 100 jumps, says Roland Ilyes of the Alsace Parachute School in Strasbourg.

Local authorities, meanwhile, have confirmed that they have launched an investigation into the young woman’s death.
