Brussels has told European Union countries that they should consider telling drivers to reduce their speed on motorways in battle. to abandon Russian fossil fuel.

The European Commission says saving energy is “the fastest way” to tackling the energy crisis.

He has published a list of behavioral changes that he claims could reduce oil and gas demand by 5 percent.

If drivers were asked to drive slower on the highway, they could save about eight million tonnes of oil equivalent a year, he claims, while another seven million tonnes could be saved if people were taken out of cars and boarded trains or public transport.

Meanwhile, the Commission estimates that refusing to heat, insulate and service boilers, according to its calculations, could save around 10 billion cubic meters of gas.

The Commission encourages Member States to “launch specific communication campaigns targeting households and industry” on how to save energy.

It is among a comprehensive package of measures set by the Commission on Wednesday, as it seeks reshape its energy system to reduce dependence on Moscow.

The EU typically bought about 40 percent of gas and 25 percent of oil from Russia.

This dependence hampered his response to the Russian attack on Ukraine and provided the Kremlin with an important source of funding.

In addition to wanting to cut off Moscow’s funding, Europe is also increasingly concerned that Moscow could cut off supplies due to sanctions.

Other measures set out on Wednesday include encouraging member states to reduce VAT rates on insulation.

It also intends to consider a common purchasing system for negotiating bulk gas purchases on behalf of the Member States.

Renewable energy targets will increase from 40 to 45 percent, with a legal obligation to install solar panels on new buildings.

The European Commission said the plan marked its “response to the distress and disruption of the global energy market caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine”.

It read: “There is a double need to transform the European energy system: ending the EU’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels, which are used as economic and political weapons and cost European taxpayers almost € 100 billion a year, and tackling the climate crisis.

“If it acts as a Union, Europe can quickly abandon its dependence on Russian fossil fuels.”
