Health authorities in Europe, the US and Australia are investigating a recent outbreak of monkeypox, a rare viral disease that is commonly confined to Africa.

Germany reported on Friday first example the virus, which became the last European country to detect an outbreak in addition to the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Sweden.

Individuals who show symptoms of the virus, which include rashes and fever, are urged to seek medical attention and contact any clinic before visiting.

“These latest cases, along with case reports from countries across Europe, confirm our initial concern that monkey goats could spread to our communities,” Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser at UKHSA, said Wednesday.

What is Monkeypox?

Monkey goats reappeared in Nigeria in 2017 after four decades without a single confirmed case. As of May 2022, 450 cases have been reported in the country.

Since then, sporadic cases have been reported in 10 African countries, including Nigeria, which experienced its largest documented outbreak in 2017. 172 suspects and 61 confirmed cases. Three-quarters were among men aged 21 to 40 years.

Cases outside Africa have been less common in the past and are usually related to international travel or imported animals. Monkey goats spread when someone comes in close contact with another person, animal, or material infected with the virus.
