Although the awarding of jubilee medals is not automatic, they are usually awarded to all soldiers and others in public service. It is estimated that 60,000 platinum jubilee medals were issued.

The Platinum Jubilee Medal, which acts as a token of national gratitude, follows a long history of awarding medals to commemorate royal anniversaries, with the first being awarded on the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign in 1887.

Designed by Timothy Noad of the College of Arms, he has a nickel silver medal on one side Ian Rank-Broadley a portrait of the Queen and the Latin inscription “Elizabeth II Dei Gratia Regina Fid Def”, which in translation means “Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen, Advocate of the Faith”.

On the back is the image of the royal coat of arms and the year of the Queen’s platinum jubilee – 1952-2022.

This is the fourth jubilee medal created for the Queen and the seventh official award of its kind awarded by the Monarch.
