Prepare for more railway strikes if workers’ wages are not raised, union leader warns

Britain needs to prepare for more strikes if workers ’wages are not raised, the union chief warned.

Mick Lynch, Secretary-General for Railways, Maritime Affairs and Transport (RMT), has promised to “continue our campaign” if a payment settlement is not reached.

He told Sky’s Sophy Ridge on Sunday that several unions were ready for industrial action over the summer because “people can’t take it anymore.”

His remarks come before a three-day RMT strike which is expected to paralyze the railway network on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday va dispute over wages and jobs.

More than 40,000 railway workers will leave, cripples the British transport network and threatens GCSE and A-Level exams and hospital appointments.

Asked if the country could experience more strikes throughout the year, Mr Lynch said: “If there is no settlement, we will continue the campaign.”

He pointed out that Aslef, the British train drivers’ union, is electing its members, and TSSA is also electing its members to Network Rail and the train operator. He added that it was “likely” that Unite would also elect its members working in the railway.

“I think a lot of unions across the country are going to vote because people can’t stand it anymore. We have people who work full time, who have to receive state benefits and use food banks, “he told the show.
